A song begins as a transmission of inspiration, received and interpreted by the songwriter. Once that happens, the only work is simply discovering what that idea wants to become.


I have spent decades working across the complete creative process — songwriting, composition, arrangement, pre-production, recording, engineering, editing, mixing, mastering and performance. My approach to production is built around artistic intention and interpretation; what does the song want to say?


Songwriting

Craft Meets Identity

I have worked professionally as a songwriter throughout my career.


My songwriting practice includes:

I am especially interested in the intersection where craft becomes identity. Two artists can use the same chords, instrumentation and song structure and create completely different works; the difference is found in the choices they make. My work with songwriters focuses on making those choices intentionally.

My production work covers the complete recording lifecycle.


Pre-Production

Before recording begins, I work with questions such as:

  • What is the central message of the song?
  • Does the arrangement support it?
  • Is every part necessary?
  • Where does the energy change?
  • What should feel intimate?
  • What should feel enormous?
  • What does the artist actually sound like?


Strong production decisions begin long before record is ever pressed.

Mixing is where arrangement, performance and sound are brought into focus.

The objective is not simply clarity, nor loudness. A mix should communicate the emotion of the song.


Mastering

The final stage between a mix and its release, my mastering work includes final sonic shaping, dynamics, translation, sequencing and preparation for distribution. The goal is to preserve the identity of the mix while making sure the finished product translates effectively across listening environments.


POPULAR & Experimental Music

My graduate training at the California Institute of the Arts included popular music, electronic music, experimental music, composition, performance, recording and music technology. That work continues to influence my approach to sound and production. Not every musical decision needs to come from conventional instrumentation or conventional structure. In fact the best ones rarely do.
